OVERVIEW

Walpurgis Night, May’s Eve, is always a nightmare in witch-haunted Arkham. There are bad doings, and a child or two frequently goes missing. This year, Miskatonic University students engaged in occult studies have been turning up dead. Arkham Police, in deference to your unusual expertise, have asked for your help to get to the root of the matter. Time is of the essence because after Walpurgis Night, the trail will grow cold and the culprits will retreat to the shadows until the next Witches' Sabbat, when the next cycle of deaths will begin.

As private investigator Howard Lovecraft, you will investigate events based on the stories "The Dreams in the Witch House" (1933), "The Thing on the Doorstep" (1933), and "The Unnamable" (1923).

Arkham Noir is a solitaire card game inspired by the interconnected stories of H. P. Lovecraft and other authors, re-imagined as noir detective stories. Each case stands alone.

Gameplay consists of adding cards to open cases, creating lines of investigation in an effort to solve them. The ultimate goal is to score five "puzzle" clue cards in order to piece together the big picture before running out of time or mental stability. Each newly shuffled deck is the start of a unique challenge, with adjustable difficulty levels to accommodate all level of players.

•••

Randolph Carter is sitting across from your desk. "The state police have strongly advised me to stay out of the area." One dead companion and two others missing, presumed dead; Carter was old money, which went a long way towards explaining why he wasn't in jail. "Uh huh" is all the enthusiasm you can muster. He continues: "We were looking into the creeping death stalking the locals. Poor, squatter types, descendants of the Dutch colonists that once claimed the land. Typer put me on to it, and now he's nowhere to be found, of course. Things got out of hand, and I wonder if you’d finish looking into it for me?" Old money trumps no money when the rent is due, so you tell him you'll motor out to the Catskills and poke around. "Bring an umbrella. There are an awful lot of storms in the area."

Arkham Noir is a solitaire card game inspired by the interconnected stories of H. P. Lovecraft and other authors, re-imagined as noir detective stories. Each case stands alone. In Case #2 – Called Forth By Thunder, as private investigator Howard Lovecraft, you will investigate events based on the stories: "The Lurking Fear" (1923) and "The Diary of Alonzo Typer" (1938). New elements such as storm cards and formula cards are introduced, which will force players to face the new challenge in a different way.

You're a writer, sure, but that doesn't pay the bills, so you got a private investigator's license off the internet. Now someone who claims to be from the FCC has hired you to look into a pirate radio station broadcasting obscenities from somewhere around Leeds, Massachusetts. Growing up near Leeds, you heard all the rumours: leeches, witches, cannibals, strange gatherings in the woods, and dead people on the radio. "You're local, you won't stick out." Only, the last guy they sent didn't report back. Police are unlikely to be much help: dozens of people disappear every year, adults and kids, and no one says boo. Happened to your cousin when you were a child.
Driving into town, thinking about lunch, her voice comes on the radio to read the station ID: "You're listening to WXXT. The murmur in the heart of Leeds."

As private investigator Matthew M. Bartlett, you will investigate events based on the stories Rangel, “If He Summons His Herd”, “Little Leeds”, “The Investigator”, and many others.

New York City. Hired to retrieve a copy of The King in Yellow stolen from an Arkham collector, you are drawn into a web of murder, suicide, and madness. Banned in most countries and denounced from the pulpit, the terrible, irresistible ideas presented in the play are unquestionably unsettling. Are the better qualities of humanity no more than false masks worn to conceal the base passions that rules all men, women, and children? It might be best not to dwell on it, and to
focus on the task at hand.

As private investigator Howard Lovecraft, you will investigate events based on Robert W. Chambers’ collection of stories, The King in Yellow, and on Raymond Chandler’s short story of the same title.
